Vasaka is native to the Indian subcontinent but is also found throughout Nepal, Srilanka, Pakistan, Malaysia, Indonesia, and China. It contains alkaloids vasicine, vasicinone, and vasinol, essential oil betane, vitamin C, b-carotene, a non-crystalline steroid vasakin, and a mixture of fatty acids.

Vasaka may be beneficial for breathing trouble, cough and cold, nasal congestion, sore throat, asthma, bronchitis, tuberculosis, bleeding disorders, diarrhea, dysentery, and glandular tumor.
