Motherwort is native to Southeastern Europe and Central Asia. The ancient Greeks used it to reduce anxiety during childbirth. It contains stachydrine, alkaloid leonurine, leonuride, diterpenoids, flavonoids, tannins, volatile oils, and vitamin A.

Motherwort may be beneficial for anxiety, heart conditions, including heart failure, irregular heartbeat, fast heartbeat, and heart symptoms due to anxiety. It may also be beneficial for the absence of menstrual periods, intestinal gas, thyroid function, and itching skin.
